Very well done! I might have suggested using a timed shutter release so that you won’t be touching the camera at the start of such a long exposure. Most simple cameras don’t have a remote release, but that is even better if you are using a nice camera. I am lazy and just use video, but If you want to print large stills a good digital still photo is hard to beat. You get 5 stars for a very good video. Thanks for sharing!!! I’ll be wathing you!

The trick is to open the shutter for a long time – seconds (3-5 or more) Based on that you would have to adjust the Aperture and Sensitivity (ASA) to get a good exposure. I would set the ASA to around 200 ( the highest my Nikon does) and then check to see what the manual setting with a 3-5 second shutter speed shows. You will probably be able to set it to a fairly high number which will give you a good depth of field ( not so critical for focus). I hope this helps.

i have a question?
i use a Nikon d40x.
and i basically followed you to get the right setting.. but what do you put the actual exposure and shutter speed at?
sorry if you explained it in the video, and i missed it. but its monsoon and im hoping to get some great photos of lightning! thanks

That maybe helps picture more quality photos but it doesn’t help you time the photo perfect? I was video taping the lightning and picked out the picture with windows moviemaker. Check out my lightning video on my user!

Yes you would use as close to that infinity setting as possible, I hope you are far away from the lighting.
You also want to use a fairly high aperture number to make everything to be in focus.

Thank you for this very informative video. I will be seeing this once or twice just to note down, the important settings. But I have a question; I use a Canon 400D, and when I switch to manual, I have to manually adjust at what distance the foto’s are sharp. Should I put this on maximum or something in between?
Thanks anyway and a great website!

Hey thanks for the comment – I agree that RAW is much better. The depth 12-16bit will add for those dark settings really help alot. It will depend if the camera features this setting instead of course. There are a bunch of other ways to remove noise also I agree that the import noise removal would be better because the dust and scratches may smooth (de-focus) too much. Thanks

Very informative. My question to you is…on your Nikon (I use a Canon 5D) are you shooting in jpeg or Raw? When you use Raw and bring it into Photoshop it gets rid of the noise for you plus you can enhance the photo in 16 bit. Or maybe I am getting too far ahead here and you are just trying to teach the basics. If I am I apologize. Thank you for sharing this video and I will be sure to send people your way as they are always asking me how to shoot lightning.

You know an odd feeling? Sitting on the toilet eating a chocolate candy bar.
